Stand Up To Cancer Day

Stand Up To Cancer Day - 8th September

The 8th of September is Stand Up to Cancer Day, which brings people together to raise funds and awareness for more effective treatment of cancer.

About the Organisation

Stand Up To Cancer is a joint national fundraising campaign from Cancer Research UK and Channel 4 that brings the UK together to speed up progress in life-saving cancer research. The organisation is currently celebrating 15 years since its inception.

Launched in the UK in 2012, Stand Up To Cancer funds research into the treatment of all forms of cancer, and aims to make academic breakthroughs in new treatments that make a real difference for people with cancer.

The breakthroughs they’ve made include the pioneering of technology to detect super low levels of cancerous DNA in blood to improve the way we diagnose ovarian cancer, developing a new immunotherapy drug to boost the power of the immune system against cancer, exploring an entirely new approach to treating bowel cancer, and much more.

How are they spreading awareness?

The contestants of the Celebrity Bake Off

Stand Up To Cancer is known for its wildly entertaining celebrity specials on Channel 4, including the iconic Great British Celebrity Bake Off. Who could forget such iconic moments as Big Narstie’s doggy biscuits or James Acaster’s breakdown (bon appetit)?

Earlier this year, celeb winners included ex-Friend David Schwimmer, actress Jess Hynes, filmmaker David Morrissey, inbetweener Joe Thomas and dragon Deborah Meaden, who were faced with challenges such as making biscuit sculptures inspired by their hometowns, 3D meringues of a Celebrity disaster scene and their earliest childhood memory rendered in choux!

You can host your own Bake Off at home, and raise funds in the process with a Fundraising Kit! The official Bake Off website has a host of sumptuous recipes for you to try for yourself too!

A few years ago, there was a comedy special in the name of SU2C called Stand Up and Deliver, which followed celebrities such as Reverend Richard Coles, Shaun Ryder, Sayeeda Warsi, Curtis Pritchard, and Katie McGlynn, as they get coached by established comedians in the hopes of hitting the stand-up circuit for the first time. Amusing anecdotes about tomatoes followed!

You could host a comedy event of your own to get the giggles in all in the name of raising funds!

For this year, a new programme is here: Don’t Look Down. Hosted by Paddy McGuinness, this sees a group of brave famous faces taking on a series of nerve-wracking and otherwise terrifying challenges, including a high wire walk 300 feet above one of London’s most iconic landmarks

We don’t suggest you try that one at home!

Streaming firm Tiltify has also partnered with Stand Up To Cancer, with their Stream Team going live streaming games and more all to raise funds. You can join the Stream Team for yourself and gather an audience of donors while you build LEGO sets or concede masses of goals on the new FIFA.

Get Involved

As you can see, there are millions of ways you can raise funds for Stand Up To Cancer, and it’s good to know all proceeds go to the funding of research for effective treatment. You can either host or take part in your own fundraising event, as well as spreading awareness or sharing your story on social media.

If you’re standing up to cancer in the name of someone you know, you can make a placard here to honour them.

More than £93 million has been raised in the UK to date, funding 64 clinical trials and projects involving more than 13,000 cancer patients.

100% of a donation received supports Stand Up To Cancer and its collaborative cancer research programs.

You can make your donation to Stand Up To Cancer here.

And if you want to get your bake on for a bake off, we have all sorts of kitchen aids including talking scales, food choppers and whisks.
