We at Ability Superstore hope you’ve all enjoyed your Christmas break and are currently enjoying a very happy and healthy New Year.

The Christmas break has just finished, and after an extended period of waking up at 12pm and demolishing tubs of chocolate, you might feel as though a lifestyle change is needed to get back on track. That’s why we at Ability Superstore want to show you ways you can keep fit in the New Year!

New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s Resolutions… everyone has them but it’s only a matter of time to see how long they last!

Research from Forbes Advisor has revealed that almost a third (30%) of Brits will be setting New Year’s Resolutions this year, and more than three in five people making resolutions (62%) have opted to make physical or dietary changes moving into 2024.

These can include:

  • Giving up smoking
  • Eating healthier
  • Meditation
  • Exercising regularly

Of course, all of these can be greatly beneficial to your lifestyle, and it’s best you stick to them to see the benefits (for a month or two at least)!

Cutting Out Smoking

For example, when it comes to quitting smoking, the NHS says:

"Stopping smoking boosts mental health and wellbeing. Evidence shows that after the withdrawal stage of quitting, people have reduced anxiety, depression, and stress. People who have quit also have increased positive mood compared with people who continue to smoke.”

So, aside from the physical benefits, you’ll feel a whole lot better mentally too.

A Balanced Diet

Eating healthily will also do you good, especially after having chocolate for breakfast for a weeklong period!

The Eatwell Guide from the NHS shows that to have a healthy, balanced diet, people should try to:

  • eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day
  • base meals on higher fibre starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice or pasta
  • have some dairy or dairy alternatives (such as soya drinks)
  • eat some beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other protein
  • choose unsaturated oils and spreads, and eat them in small amounts
  • drink plenty of fluids (at least 6 to 8 glasses a day)

So as long as you stick to the key food groups in all the right portions, and keep saturated fat, salt and sugar to a minimum, you’re on your way to having a balanced diet!

Meditation and Mindfulness

You can also reap the benefits of meditation and mindfulness if you practice them. If in the last year, you felt especially susceptible to stress, these may be of great help to you.

Studies have shown that meditating for regular periods can:

  • Reduce stress
  • Improve emotional wellbeing
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improve brain function
  • Increase attention span
  • Elevate energy levels

So, if you’re feeling burnt out from the Christmas period, this might be the way forward for you!

Getting Up and Moving

Finally, regular exercise can benefit you in more ways than you might think.

The NHS says it's medically proven that people who do regular physical activity have lower risk of:

  • coronary heart disease and stroke
  • type 2 diabetes
  • bowel cancer
  • breast cancer in women
  • early death
  • osteoarthritis
  • hip fracture
  • falls (among older adults)
  • depression
  • dementia

And it’s easier than you might think to get some exercise in to avoid a sedentary lifestyle. Here’s some ways from Ability Superstore that you can get up and moving.
