How to Stay Warm This Winter

Winter is fast approaching, and you might have noticed darker, colder nights with the temperature dropping anywhere you go.

Some people feel the effects of cold weather more than others, such as those with Reynaud’s, asthma, cardiovascular conditions, arthritis, over 65’s and infants.

Older people are more affected by the cold because it is more difficult to maintain their body temperature, as past the age of 55, you lose 1% of muscle mass every year which is where the ability to maintain your body heat comes from.

With the cost of living crisis still looming, many households still feel reluctant to putting the heating on, and many are finding Winter Fuel Payments to not be sufficient.

This is why Ability Superstore want to give you some tips and advice on how to stay warm this winter.

Watch the Weather

Keeping updated on the weather is the best way to be prepared for any temperature drops, ice, and snow so you can prepare to dress appropriately and adjust your heating accordingly.

If you don’t want to wait for the 6 o’clock news to see the weather, you can now receive alerts from the Met Office or you can check the weather in your area with a simple Google search.

Wrap Up Warm

Now that you know how cold it’s going to be, if you’re heading out make sure you’re wearing plenty of layers to keep you insulated!

You can stack layers up with vest tops, long johns, thermal socks, jumpers, fleeces, gloves, woolly scarves and hats, and not forgetting your big coat! And while you’re inside, be sure to stay snug with blankets and dressing gowns.

Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot

With rising gas bills, you might feel reluctant to put the heating on in your home, but it’s important to make sure your home doesn’t drop below 16°.

There are many ways you can retain the heat in your home, including thick blinds and curtains, double-glazing, and making sure all doors and windows are shut properly.

Keep On Moving

Even some brief, quick exercise for no longer than 2 minutes can keep the blood pumping round your body, thus increasing your internal body temperature! Try doing some star jumps, jogging in place, or even just walking up and down the stairs!

We at Ability Superstore also want to let you know we are proud to stock some fantastic daily living aids that can help keep you warm in cold weather.
